Purchase of equipment of in-situ measurements
Processing and storage of quality measurement data

All project partners defined certain labs to execute quality measurements as follows:
  • Region of Crete
  • Responsible lab: IMBC: chemical and microbiological labs
  • Water quality monitoring program in the area around Lassithiotika Mountain:
In the framework of INTERISK project a grid of 32 sampling stations has been established covering all around the mountainous area under investigation (Lassithiotika mountains). This area has been divided in six sections that covered distinct local depository or carstic aquifers.
The water sampling program in all selected stations started in October 2001 and continued with a monthly sequence after the end of the project. The water quality physical, chemical and microbiological parameters decided by PMC were regularly controlled in each station.
All analytical data produced were incorporated in the central electronic database that has been developed by IMBC and they were forwarded to the responsible departments for decision-making. The local authorities have been informed on the results of the measurement by the Regional Water Management Board. Preventive measures are planned to be forwarded if necessary. Concluding, the water quality level in the pilot area has been identified and consequently the aim of the monitoring program is now focused on the long-term observation of the measured parameters as well as the follow up of the preventive measures planned by the local and regional authorities. The results of this activity where presented in the final conference of the project organized in Heraklion on December 2002.

  • Region of Central Macedonia
  • In parallel to the various specialized labs operating in the area, the INTERISK remote stations installed by C. Macedonia monitor a number of quality parameters. Quality parameters measurements started after the installation of the new stations.

  • Region of Sofia
  • Responsible lab: Dams and Cascades Company in Sofia
  • The existing equipment is installed in the chemical laboratories of Dams and Cascades Company in Sofia. The equipment was set in operation under the project, from June 2001. In the framework of the water quality-monitoring program, a grid of 8 sampling stations was established covering all around the area of Sofia Pan. The locations of all the stations were defined in the study of identification needs for Sofia region. The water-sampling program started in October 2002 and continues with a monthly sequence after the end of the project. In each station the determined water quality physical, chemical and microbiological parameters are regularly examined. All data produced are stored in the regional Database, developed by IMBC.

  • Region of Gjirokastra
  • Responsible labs: Directorate of Water Enterprise, Directorate of Agriculture and Food
  • Quality measurements were performed on a monthly basis after 1st of August 2002. The involved labs utilized existing equipment to provide the parameters. Quality measurements have been forwarded in the Hossi Water source and Drino river. All data produced are stored in the regional Database, developed by IMBC.

  • Municipality of Dojran
  • Responsible lab: Public enterprise for communal utilities, Komulalec-Polin.
  • The water quality measurements (microbiological, chemical) for Dojran Lake were performed by Komulalec-Polin until a local lab will be organized by the municipality.
A common protocol for water sampling was decided which could be adapted in any kind of water resource. This protocol has been used for data transmission to the regional and interregional Database.
Water sampling and analysis procedure followed the technical protocols of the Public enterprise for communal utilities, Komulalec-Polin.
Because of the alarming situation of the lake Dojran the municipality decided to establish an autonomous local water quality control system by developing a local lab. The purpose of the lab is to perform analyses on the spot and to get faster and easier the water quality data. For that reason the municipality bought one spectrophotometer and one PH-meter to equip the local lab, as its own financial contribution to the project. One chemist was properly trained for this operation. For the development of the new laboratory the municipality offered a premise within the Wastewater treatment plant "Toplec" in Nov Dojran.
The City of Dojran can provide quality data records, on monthly basis, from 1-1-2001 to 31-12-2002. These records register measurements of one station owned by the Hydro-meteorological Department of FYROM and the laboratories of Republic's Department for health protection. After the installation of the hydro-metrological station financed by INTERISK and the lab equipment installed within the Wastewater treatment plant ²Toplec² in Nov Dojran, sufficient records will be received and the whole process can be evaluated. These facilities will be basically valorized after the INTERISK finalization. All data produced are stored in the regional Database, developed by IMBC.
